Often as a child I heard "Do what God wants you to do", often may have been an understatement. In church sessions this was drilled in my head amongst other youths. Fortunately Jesus raised me with wisdom to decipher what's spiritual and what's from man.
It wasn't until a decade later when it finally registered exactly how to utilize this message. It did not necessarily mean cash out your investments, buy three piece suits and become a preacher; though that may apply to many it also has a broader defining.
There are some scriptures along with prayer and tribulation that helped me to understand:
Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us let us use them, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith. (Romans 12:6)
Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. (Ecclesiastes 5:19)
You have to see your success before you can be your success. If you are judgemental, traditional, and don't pray on the text you could miss it. I will pick at myself for example. Several professions were tried in my attempt at happiness. All along I knew I wasn't happy until leaving and getting time to express my talents.
I recall the burning feeling inside my body with the thought of "Can't wait to get outta work and hit the stu."
Therefore I went full time with making music, since tapping into other art forms and have been benefiting from God's gifts.
Stop thinking you have to be broke to obey God. He said in every thing you do to praise him, so I do just that. I even incorporate His works in my material. In the heart of my performance with the power he gave me to move nations I feel edified.
Your talent may be different than mine, nurses, chefs, athletes, etc. Use your talents and let God make you rich. Remember don't quit your career, do pray for guidance and walk in faith.
